Space Opera, New Space Opera – and Space Opera today
First there was Space Opera, simple but popular stories about derring-do among the stars. Beginning in the 1970s and 80s there was a reaction against the old and New Space Opera was born, more centered (it is claimed) on character development, fine writing and a moral exploration of contemporary social issues. Is this claim true? What are the best, most representative and interesting examples of the different types of Space Opera? And what defines the space opera written today?
Lecture by John-Henri Holmberg.

Maria Gripes olika ansikten
Paneldiskussion.

Fantastic worlds we would like to visit
Science fiction and fantasy depict many different worlds and societies. Which are the most appealing? The places, times and worlds we would like to live in or to visit? But could one persons dream be another’s nightmare?
Panel discussion.

Paneldiskussion.

The Multiverse – creative asset or disadvantage?
Variations of what is called the multiverse have appeared a lot in fantastic stories lately, both in literature and on film/tv. Sure, it can be the basis of an exciting story. But how exciting is it really when every potential world or event is possible? How touching is the heroic death of a character if the same character always may return somewhere in the multiverse? What are the examples of good or poor use of this concept?
Panel discussion.

Housekeeping in space: Who´s cleaning the space ship?
Adventures among the planets is fun to read about and watch. But who takes care of the practicalities? Who does the cleaning and prepares the food? By what method is the trash sorted and taken care of and is there no need to wash your clothes in space? In books and movies little time is spent on these questions. What are the examples of interesting solutions? Robots or nanoparticles? Living space ships that absorb the dirt? Or would the brave space farers perhaps bring mum along to take care of the dishes?
Panel discussion.

The dark forest in Fantasyland
The forest has always been a important part of fantasy, fairy tales and horror. The Nordic countries are covered by forest. Is the forest perceived, described and used in a different way in the Nordic countries compared with stories from other parts of the world?
Panel discussion

Brave New Plate – Science and the future of food
Science journalist Torill Kornfeldt delves deep into the research on the future of food. Will it be all about insect burgers, algae smoothies, and nutrition pills, or are there other visions of what, how, and why we will eat in the future?
Lecture

Att skriva science fiction and fantasy
Paneldiskussion

What Twelve Years of Research Taught Me about Urban Fantasy
In 2012, Stefan Ekman first wondered what social criticism had to do with urban fantasy. Now, he can finally provide a concise summary of his recently completed research project on the subject. The presentation will discuss some insights into the characteristics and history of the urban fantasy genre, such as thoughts about why cities are not obligatory urban fantasy settings, how the genre’s historical development resembles a bundle of threads, and what modernity has to do with any of this. (For those interested, his book on the subject is available for free download at https://doi.org/10.3998/mpub.14414299.)
Lecture

Svenska kongresser på 70- och 80-talet
Hör berättelserna av de som var med. Bildbevis kommer att presenteras.
Paneldiskussion

Hur läser man idag klassisk sf?
Paneldiskussion

50 years of The Dispossessed
2024 marks the 50 year anniversary of Ursula K. Le Guin’s classic science fiction novel The Dispossessed. One of the few books to win the Hugo, Locus and Nebula Awards, it is widely considered a defining work of SFF literature. What made the book so beloved and what keeps people reading it to this day? Does it read as a political manifesto, a character study, a speculative thought experiment – or all of the above? What themes resonated with contemporary audiences, and what can we take from the novel when rereading it 50 years on?
Paneldiskussion

AI and self-awareness
Is there a real risk of AI becoming self-aware? If so, should we accept that they have as much free will as we humans, and teach them ethics and the difference between right and wrong? Will we get partners or servants? Will the use of AI in warfare make it impossible to bring someone to justice? The panel discusses these issues and gives examples from sf.
Paneldiskussion

Paneldiskussion

Encounters with aliens
Encounters with aliens have long been a common ingredient in science fiction stories. But do these depictions really say anything about us humans? One story becomes a cautionary reflection of Western colonization while another depicts a hope for the future. Are the dark and negative depictions simply just fear of change? What are the best, most interesting, and most credible descriptions of such encounters?
Panel discussion

Open craft café
Bring your stuff: knitting, embroidery, spinning, sewing or what it may be. We sit and work and talk. Show and tell or just be at ease for a while with your creation.
Workshop

Wandering the world’s conventions
The world is full of exciting science fiction and fantasy conventions. But how does one find them, join them, prepare for them, and what should one bring along for them? And why should we attend a convention far away in a country where we do not even know the language? Experienced convention travelers draw on their breadth of experience in attending conventions held in another language, how to select the conventions to go to and how to choose the right luggage for a long, convention-oriented trip.
Panel discussion

How did the Norse use skulls during the Viking Period?
From the period AD 750-1050 there are a number of finds of human skulls in rather odd contexts around the Nordic region. Archaeologist Martin Rundkvist reports on new research into this overlooked find category. How were skulls used during the Viking Period?
Lecture

To write in different genres
What are the challenges with writing in multiple different genres? How do different genres’ requirements affect approaches to writing, research, and even writing environment (such as playlists, for authors who use them)? Is the same planning and research needed when writing science fiction, fantasy, detective stories, romance or literary fiction? How do writing style and character portrayals vary depending on the genre?
Panel discussion

Svensk Fantasy idag
Paneldiskussion

Strong Female Characters
How have gender roles changed over time in SF and fantasy? Female characters take on ever-greater roles in fantastic fiction. Have strong female characters displaced male ones? Is it because women play an ever-larger role in society generally? Do female characters play a more significant role in science fiction and fantasy because more women are writing and creating fantastic worlds? How do changing gender dynamics affect how one reads, or how viewers appreciate what they watch?
Panel discussion

Prepare for Impact – Rewatching Star Trek part II
The Star Trek panel from Konflikt cannot get enough of Star Trek. The discussion and analysis of old Star Trek episodes continues.
Panel discussion

Economics of Extraterrestrial Mining
When we settle other worlds, it will be cheaper to mine some of the materials we need on those worlds rather than bring them from Earth. But will mines on other worlds ever be a reason to establish settlements in the first place? Mining colonies are a popular staple of SF, but how plausible are they? In this talk we will look at what some of the economics of extraterrestrial mining might look like in reality, and compare with how we see this treated in SF.
Lecture by Jesper Stage
